The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

A gentle bedtime story · 506 words · ~4 min read aloud

In a quiet corner of the countryside… where the fields stretched wide and green… there lived a small and gentle mouse.

This was the Country Mouse. Her home was simple… a little space beneath the roots of a tree… soft, safe, and peaceful. The air was soft… and everything felt calm and unhurried.

One day, she had a visitor. Her cousin had come to see her— a mouse from the town.

The Town Mouse arrived with a quick step… and bright, curious eyes.

"Welcome," said the Country Mouse warmly. "I'm so glad you've come."

She brought out what she had to share: a few grains of wheat… some seeds… and a small piece of dried fruit.

They sat together quietly… and began their meal.

The Town Mouse nibbled politely. But after a moment, she paused. "My dear cousin," she said, gently, "you are very kind…" "But your food is quite… simple."

The Country Mouse smiled softly. "It is enough," she said.

The Town Mouse thought for a moment. "Why don't you come with me," she said, "and see how we live in the town?"

The Country Mouse hesitated… but she was curious.

So the next day, they set off together. They traveled along the path… past fields and fences… until at last, they reached the town.

Everything there felt different. The streets were busy. The air was full of sound.

But the Town Mouse led her cousin inside a large house. "There," she said, "is where we will dine."

On a great table… there was more food than the Country Mouse had ever seen. Cheese… bread… sweet cakes… and many other things besides.

The Country Mouse's eyes grew wide. They climbed onto the table… and began to nibble.

At first, it was wonderful. But suddenly— there was a noise. A door creaked. Footsteps sounded nearby.

The mice froze. "Quick!" whispered the Town Mouse. They ran… hiding behind a curtain.

The room grew quiet again. Slowly, they returned to the table.

But before they could take another bite— another sound came. This time, it was louder. The mice ran again… their tiny hearts beating fast.

They hid in a corner… very still… very quiet. The sounds echoed through the room… sharp and sudden… then gone again.

After a while… the sounds faded. But the Country Mouse did not feel at ease. She looked around… then gently turned to her cousin.

"Thank you," she said softly, "for showing me your home." "But I think… I would rather go back."

The Town Mouse tilted her head. "Back?" she asked.

"Yes," said the Country Mouse. "I would rather have simple food… and feel safe and peaceful…" "than have a feast… and feel afraid."

The Town Mouse was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded.

And so, the Country Mouse returned home… to her quiet fields… her simple meals… and her peaceful little burrow.

Sometimes… a calm and quiet life… is the very best kind of all.

And now… it's time to rest. Let everything grow still… and peaceful. Goodnight.
